As Sony's classic MIPI-output integrated zoom camera, the FCB-EV9500M, with its 30x enhanced optical zoom, MIPI signal output, Super Image Stabilization, and 1/1.8-inch STARVIS high-sensitivity sensor, is widely used in UAV inspection, airborne pods, vehicle-mounted imaging, SoC chip debugging, and other projects.

For large or important projects, key components are usually prepared with two or more solutions. Our company, based on extensive project implementation experience, shares two types of replacement solutions for the Sony FCB-EV9500M to help customers select according to their needs.

As Sony's classic MIPI-output integrated zoom camera, the FCB-EV9500M, with its 30x enhanced optical zoom, native MIPI signal output, Super Image Stabilization, and the low-light imaging advantages of a 1/1.8-inch STARVIS high-sensitivity sensor, has long become recognized benchmark imaging hardware in projects such as UAV inspection, airborne pods, vehicle-mounted imaging, and embedded SoC chip debugging.

For large, high-priority key projects, preparing two or more backup solutions for core components in advance has long been standard practice in the industry to avoid supply chain risks. Our company, based on on-site implementation experience from hundreds of projects, has sorted out two types of mature replacement solutions for the Sony FCB-EV9500M, covering project needs with different budgets and different development cycles, helping customers select according to their needs and completely avoiding project delay risks caused by supply chain fluctuations.

I. Why Can't You Avoid the FCB-EV9500M?

The Sony FCB-9500 series includes three models with the same dimensions:

FCB-EW9500H, HDMI output, max frame rate: 2160p/60

FCB-EV9500L, LVDS output, max frame rate: 1080p/60

FCB-EV9500M, MIPI output, max frame rate: 1080p/60

Let's take a closer look at its main specifications:

1/1.8-type STARVIS CMOS, approx. 4.17 million effective pixels;

30x enhanced optical zoom, f=6.5–162.5 mm, F1.6–F4.8;

1080p/60 MIPI CSI-2 output, 4-lane differential;

Super Image Stabilization (Super / Super+), WDR, defog, low-light color ICR-ON mode;

Body dimensions 56 × 64 × 125 mm, weight approx. 439 g;

VISCA control protocol (CMOS 3.3V level, 9.6k–115.2kbps) [1]

The Sony FCB-EV9500M fits a 30x enhanced optical zoom into a 1/1.8-inch large sensor and still provides MIPI output. This combination makes it a truly substantial zoom camera module in scenarios such as UAVs, vehicle-mounted systems, robots, and industrial inspection, where direct connection to a main control SoC (Rockchip, Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson, etc.) is required.

II. What Are the Solutions for Quickly Replacing the Sony FCB-EV9500M?

For projects that have already completed hardware, structural, and software development based on the FCB-EV9500M, do not want to change the PCB, do not want to modify the pod structure, and hope to reuse the existing VISCA control code.

Solution 1: FCB-EV9500L + LVDS to MIPI Interface Board

The Sony FCB-EV9500L and FCB-EV9500M are completely identical in imaging, stabilization, and zoom parameters except for the video output signal. Paired with Our company's independently developed LVDS to MIPI Interface board, it converts the FCB-EV9500L's LVDS video signal into MIPI video signal output. The original hardware structure, VISCA control protocol, and image functions are 100% retained.

FCB-EV9500L + LVDS to MIPI Interface Board

Advantages: The imaging effect is fully aligned with the FCB-EV9500M, there is no need to modify business logic, and replacement of the FCB-EV9500M can be completed quickly.

Solution 2: FCB-ER9500 + 4K HDMI to MIPI Interface Board

The Sony FCB-ER9500 uses the same body dimensions as the FCB-EV9500M and features a 1/1.8-inch 4K STARVIS 2 CMOS sensor. It inherits main functions such as high sensitivity, image stabilization, defog, WDR, Spot Auto Focus, Spot Auto Exposure, Spot Auto White Balance, and IR-sensitive color mode. It is also equipped with 25x optical zoom and 4K/60p output. Paired with a 4K HDMI to MIPI interface board, it is a perfect 4K UHD replacement solution for the FCB-EV9500M.

Advantages: Direct upgrade to 4K@60p, backward compatible with 1080p60 output; VISCA commands are fully compatible, software requires almost no modification, and image quality and resolution are further improved.

Important Notes:

1. The LVDS to MIPI interface board and the 4K HDMI to MIPI interface board include only hardware encoder boards, not driver software.

2. Both the FCB-EV9500L and FCB-ER9500 have weight-reduced versions, which effectively reduce weight and are suitable for applications with weight requirements.

FAQ

Q: Can the FCB-EV9500L + LVDS to MIPI interface board seamlessly replace the FCB-EV9500M?

A: Yes. The replacement solution outputs MIPI CSI-2 signal just like the FCB-EV9500M.

Q: Why does Our company only provide hardware encoder boards and not driver software?

A: Because there are many types of SoC main control chips on the market, and the driver software for each type is different, so it is temporarily impossible to provide software drivers for many types in small batches.
